Basic GeoGuessr Tips.
What is GeoGuessr?
GeoGuessr is an educational geography-based browser game where you are placed in a random location on Google Street View and you must find out where you are, then guess it on a map. I have spent a fair amount of time on this game and I find it fun and interesting to play and find clues for each country. I would sometime want to play in a tournament, but that is quite far away as I am only masters division right now. I am still learning and that's why I want to test my knowledge and provide you with one tip for EVERY country included in the game.
This is a map of every country that has Google Street View coverage.
Key Words
Trekker
A trekker is a small amount of non-official Google coverage that is often significantly harder to guess on than a regular round on Google coverage. There are few countries in the world that have Trekker coverage, but the rounds are still possible and can often be very difficult.
Bollards
Bollards are small pylons on the side of the road used to keep traffic on the road. These are important for the game because many countries have unique bollards which help us in our guesses.
Meta
Meta is the word used for things such as bollards or Google Car Meta. It is called this because these are things that basically have nothing to do with the actual geography or culture of a country. It's just little things with the google car such as the colour or stuff that is unique to that country.
Official Coverage / GEN
Official coverage is the term used for coverage that was officially taken by Google. This coverage has generations, GEN 1, 2, 3, and 4. GEN is short for generation and the latest is GEN 4, these represent the time period that Google took the capture. GEN 1 being the oldest, and GEN 4 being the newest. You can normally tell because GEN 1 is horrible quality, GEN 2 has a circular blur below the car and a halo blur in the sky, GEN 3 has a good quality camera, and GEN 4 has a very nice camera with a more saturated look. This is useful because some countries only have certain generations, for example South Africa is the only country in Africa to have GEN 2 coverage.
Car Meta
Google car meta is when there is a specific Google car or part of a Google car that is unique to one or more countries. Such as the Dominican Republic car or the Curacao car. The Curacao car is black with tape on it while the Domninican Republic car has a large roof rack with wide black strips on it.
License Plates
License plates, although blurred, are very helpful for us in GeoGuessr. The most widely known tip with license plates is the blue strip on the left side of European Union countries. There are also some countries that have two blue strips like Italy or Albania and some countries with yellow plates and a blue strip such as The Netherlands or Luxembourg. But don't get confused with the United Kingdom's only yellow plates or Israel's similar looking yellow with a blue strip plates. Another common tip is Kyrgyzstan's red strip on license plates or Argentina's black dot. Longer license plates are found more in Europe and thinner in The Americas. There are many more tips and I could go on for paragraphs about it so I'm just going to leave it here.
